Neglected Buttermarket-painful state of dirt and dilapidation

Leicester Chronicle – Saturday 26 March 1881 Leicester Chronicle

The original Market Cross occupied a central site at the end of Watling Street, which separates the two parishes. This was said to be a long and slender octagonal fluted column, ornamented in the flutings with curved heads and quatrefoils. In 1793, Sir Joseph Danvers, the lord of the manor, removed it to Swithland Park. He substituted for it a small circular market house supported by pillars, but this is now in a painful state of dirt and dilapidation.
