William Marshall, 1st Earl of Pembroke was the Earl Marshall100_3242 and Regent of the Kingdom at the time of the infant King Henry III. In 1217 Mountsorrel Castle was under seige by  William Marshall and the Earl of Chester. The armies of Prince Louis and the rebel barons of England marched to the relief of the castle. From Mountsorrel the armies marched on to Lincoln where they were defeated at the Battle of Lincoln Fair. This marked the end of Prince Louis in England. The King received news that the Mountsorrel garrison had fled and gave orders for the Castle to be razed to the ground.

  1. I have read ‘The History of William Marshall’, a contemporary account of the Marshals life. It does not mention the Marshall actually being at Mountsorrel in person. I think this is a bit of wishful thinking.

  2. I am rather puzzled as to why you do not allow people to print this page. I have been interested in the life of William Marshal for some time – I think he is one of the forgotten figures of English history, and arguably achieved more than some of the kings he served. It would be good if more people knew about him.
