THREE-DAY FAIR

One of their chief memories was of the fair which was held every year until the 1930’s. There would be steam engines and dodgems, with donkey rides from the top to the bottom of The Green.

The fair would be in the middle of June, on the Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday. On the Sunday evening church services were held.

“All The Green would be packed” Sid said, “and the village band played. A big cake was BBA_067 (4)then laid out in all the pubs. People drank a lot, but then they worked hard.”

Both of them had vivid memories of cows grazing on The Green and of them making their way through to the farmhouse at the side. There were fields to the back where now there is an estate.

Sid said: “One of the funniest things I remember was that the agent of the Earl of Lanesborough used to come around and if he saw a car parked on The Green he would fine the owner 4d, a penny for each wheel.”

They also thought that in some ways times had changed for the worse, especially as BBA_067 (5)there was a great deal of vandalism at the weekends. George Dodge was glad of one thing, though. He no longer had to go down to the well at the comer of The Green to collect the water.
