Rolls Royce factory, Mountsorrel 1945

When the Alvis factory in Coventry was bombed in 1940, its workforce was transferred to Mountsorrel to work at the Linkfield Road premises of Clarke’s Boxes. The factory was requisitioned by the government and box manufacturing moved to Rothley and Shepshed for the duration.

In 1945 Alvis returned to Coventry and the Alvis no.2 was rented to the De Havilland Company for a short time, after which the site was rented to and later bought by Rolls Royce Ltd.

  1. Can you please correct the spelling of my mother’s name in the 10th image down.
    It should be Barbara Mackay

    Thank you.

  2. Does anyone remember Mr Fred mcinness who worked at rolls Royce around 1945-49 I would appreciate any information, about him, thank you

    1. Hello Anna,
I have circulated your request to members of the Mountsorrel Heritage Group.

      Best wishes

      Keith Foster

  3. In picture number 6, Mrs. Hall (Rene?), don’t think it’s Rene as her married name was Cassidy (ran the Working Men’s Club for many years), she was my aunty. If the person in the picture is a Mrs. Hall, it could be either June (no relation), or it might be Josie who was married to Fred Hall, my Dad’s older brother. Hope this is somewhat helpful.

    1. Connie Hudson, who supplied the names, has had a closer look and agrees it is not Rene. She does recognises the face but cannot recall the name.

  4. The first photo of Fred Binns. I think that actually looks like my Grandfather, Fred Bullock. He worked for Alvis and met his wife there Margaret Spencer who was George Spencer’s sister. George married Elsie Edwards as mentioned above.

  5. I worked in the canteen from1964 to 1966 as a young chef moving to the new canteen up the top in 1965…did anyone work or eat there?
