William Marshall, 1st Earl of Pembroke was the Earl Marshall and Regent of the Kingdom at the time of the infant King Henry III. In 1217 Mountsorrel Castle was under seige by William Marshall and the Earl of Chester. The armies of Prince Louis and the rebel barons of England marched to the relief of the castle. From Mountsorrel the armies marched on to Lincoln where they were defeated at the Battle of Lincoln Fair. This marked the end of Prince Louis in England. The King received news that the Mountsorrel garrison had fled and gave orders for the Castle to be razed to the ground.
